Demands Affecting Work and Family
Today, the society has changed a lot. In the past, women only engaged in unproductive duties which never contributed to any economic significance, but today, women work just like men. As a consequence, there are many challenges that have affected the families as women try to establish a balance between work and family duties (Wallen, 2002). Past researchers laid more focus on the effect on the family as a result of women engaging in employment. Today, the researchers have tried to establish the relationship between work and family for both women and men. The effect of work demands on the family can be clearly explained through the feminist theory perspective (Wallen, 2002).
The society plays a vital role in the social life of individuals. The society allocates various roles and responsibilities to both men and women. It is expected that the women care for the family and not engage in employment. The men are expected to be the bread winners as they have to provide for their families. Men are supposed to be leaders in their families. The society perceives women as subjects to men. Family affairs run well when the men take up their role as bread winners leaving the women to play their roles in the families. Women engage in employment so as to supplement the family income and improve their economic status. The society has a very negative perception of women who engage in employment as this is against the social norms (Lizotte & Litwak, 2009).
The society holds strong beliefs that a woman who engages in employment destroys her family relations. Women employment has some negative effect on them and their families. Women face stress as they struggle to balance work demands and the family chores (Wallen, 2002). Researchers have discovered that the society perceives women employment to have little or no significance. Women end up with more roles than men. In situations where both spouses are engaged in employment, women have to balance the numerous family chores with work (Wallen, 2002). Whenever women are not working, they have a heavy workload in their families since men do not assist women in the family chores. Men need to take up some family roles so as to reduce the stress faced by working women. This has resulted in constrained relationships in the families. On the other hand, the productivity of women in their work places reduces, and they may end up losing their jobs.
Hughes and Galinsky argue that working women often lack the time to spend with their families; many of them experience fatigue and lack of energy (Lizotte & Litwak, 2009). Today, people spend more hours working and have less free time. Married women who had young children face serious problems in balancing work and family responsibilities. A research revealed that work responsibilities interfered with their relations with their husbands.
On the other hand, men also face serious problems as they try to maintain a balance between work and family. The work demands pose a serious threat to the families. The work schedules are not favorable to the family set-up. In some situations, the workers have to work in night shifts. This negatively affects both men and women (Lizotte & Liwak, 2009). Women who have little kids encounter problems as they lack enough time to cater for the young ones. In some occasions, the work demands constant trips. This may end up destroying the close ties between the spouses. Couples may end up in a conflict since managing distant relationships is stressing (Wallen, 2002).
In some other occasions, couples are expected to work in areas that are far from their families. This also reduces the time spent with the family. According to the feminists, the excessive workload among women poses the main challenge. Men should be ready to take up some family duties so as to assist women (Lizotte&Litwak, 2009). This can help in reducing the negative effects of work and family demands.
